I visited Old School – The New School for Graphic Design and Typography on its open day to see what it was all about. I instantly loved the blackboard that welcomed us and the idea of learning in a such a homely environment.
“Old School – The New School for Graphic Design and Typography” was founded by a lecturer of mine from uni, Veronica Grow. It is an adventurous idea and Veronica has thrown herself into it! The new concept – an independent Melbourne School for Communication Design and Typography – gives students an alternative to the traditional learning space. The aim of the school is to be less about beaurocracy and more about the craftsmanship of design.
The Name “Old School” emphasizes a focus on making things by hand and using the computer only as a tool. Veronica has created a friendly environment where students can feel comfortable to explore and experiment. The school is aimed at designers and non designers too with a range of short courses; including bookbinding, DIY design and creating your own fonts. As well as a 2 year design program! Old school has a strong belief that designers can create positive change where design touches the heart. I love that!
Good luck Veronica! (How great are the drawings of the owls!)
